EPDs for Nor-Maali´s coatings

6/6/2023

Nor-Maali’s water-borne Norepox Aqua DTM and six solvent-based epoxy and polyurethane coatings have received EPDs (Environmental Product Declarations). EPD is a voluntary and a standardized practice to provide reliable and comparable information about the environmental impact of our coatings throughout its entire lifecycle. Our EPD certified products are also classified for LEED and BREEAM and therefore also for construction projects that need to meet those criterias.

Environmental Product Declaration

EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) is a standardized (EN 15804+A2 & ISO 14025 / ISO 21930) report that objectively presents what a product is made of and how it impacts the environment throughout its lifecycle. EPD provides information about a product’s carbon footprint (Global Warming Potential) as well as its environmental effects on air, soil, and water bodies.

EPDs are voluntary, but their use is growing rapidly in the construction industry in line with awareness about environmental impacts. EPDs support the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by making it possible to compare the impacts of different materials and products in order to select the most sustainable option. A verified EPD can earn certification credits for green building schemes like BREEAM (Building Research Establlishment Environmental Assessment Methodology) and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).

EPD products

The Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) has been granted to the water-borne Norepox Aqua DTM and the solvent-based NorECOat FD Primer, NorECOat HS Primer, Noreguard HS, Norepox HS, Normafine 80 and Normadur 65 HS.

EPDs for Nor-Maali´s coatings

Water-borne Norepox Aqua DTM

Norepox Aqua DTM is a fast-drying epoxy coating with a low VOC content. The product contains rust preventing pigments and is recommended to use as a primer, topcoat or direct-to-metal coating in epoxy paint systems in environmental classes C2-C4. Norepox Aqua is easy to spray and it forms a very smooth surface. Norepox Aqua DTM is M1 classified.

Solvent-based epoxies

The EPD has been granted to Nor-Maali’s four solvent-based epoxy coatings: NorECOat FD Primer, NorECOat HS Primer, Noreguard HS and Norepox HS. All four products are high volume solids and they dry fast even at low temperatures. NorECOat FD Primer and NorECOat HS Primer are primers, and Noreguard HS and Norepox HS are topcoats and direct-to-metal coatings.

NorECOat FD Primer and NorECOat HS Primer are recommended for use as primers or midcoat on steel surfaces in epoxy paint systems in environmental classes C2-C5. NorECOat HS Primer is suitable for applications that require the use of mastic-type coatings. The product is also suitable for immersion in fresh and sea water.

Among the topcoats, Noreguard HS contains active rust preventing pigments and can be applied in high film thicknesses. Norepox HS is epoxy coating with a special hardener and excellent stackability properties. Both products are suitable as direct-to-metal coatings in environmental classes C2-C3 and as topcoats in epoxy paint systems in environmental classes C2-C5.

Solvent-based polyurethanes

EPD approval has been granted to Nor-Maali’s solvent-based polyurethane coatings Normafine 80 and Normadur 65 HS. Both coatings are high volume solids with similarities and differences. Both Normafine 80 and Normadur 65 HS contain rust preventing pigments and can be used as topcoats as well as single coats directly on metal. Additionally, both coatings exhibit excellent film flexibility.

Normafine 80 is an excellent choice for new applications due to its gloss and outstanding UV resistance. Normadur 65 HS, on the other hand, is suitable for maintenance painting on old paints surfaces due to its excellent adhesion. Both Normafine 80 and Normadur 65 HS are available as colored base paints, which can be used to create yellow, orange, and red shades with excellent coverage.

Nor-Maali’s Normafine 40 HS – A Reliable Choice for Colder Conditions

31/10/2024 As autumn cools down and winter approaches, it's good to consider which coatings best suit for industrial painting in cold conditions. Cold weather can pose challenges for painting and often increases costs, but with the right product selection, significant savings can be achieved without compromising quality. The drying temperature of the paint and the number of coating layers directly impact the process's cost-efficiency. In this context, Nor-Maali’s Normafine 40 HS is an excellent choice—a high-solids polyurethane coating that cures even in low temperatures and functions effectively as a direct-to-metal coating solution.
