Improved opacity with coloured bases

Nor-Maali offers its customers a comprehensive range of polyurethane coatings for anti-corrosion painting of steel surfaces. The colours of the objects to be painted vary from light to dark, including bright shades as well. With Nor-Maali’s polyurethane coatings bright yellow and red shades also have good opacity.

Nor-Maali provides high-quality polyurethane coatings for anti-corrosion painting. The product range includes, among others, Normafine 80, Normafine HS, Normadur 65 HS, Normadur 90 HS and Normadur Aqua DTM coatings. These products have a common feature that customers may not always think of: coloured base paints with excellent hiding power.

Tinting in Nor-Maali

Colours play an important role in industrial painting. They create images and recognizability for machinery and equipment. Many ACE & OEM manufacturers have their own signature shades. The appearance of the product matters in the sales situation, but colours can also be a safety factor in many industrial applications.

When hundreds of different shades of paint are wanted, tinting is the most sensible way to produce them. Instead of manufacturing all the different shades, Nor-Maali produces a few base colours from which all desired shades can be tinted. This keeps inventory levels lower. Most Nor-Maali´s topcoats have three different base colours with varying degrees of whiteness. Additionally, some topcoats are also available in yellow, orange and red bases. Coloured bases offer better opacity for the shades.

Nor-Maali´s polyurethane coatings

From Nor-Maali’s polyurethane coatings, Normafine 80, Normafine HS, Normadur 65 HS, Normadur 90 HS, and Normadur Aqua DTM are produced as coloured bases. All of these have a yellow base, and some also have a red base. The widest range of base colours is found in the Normadur 65 HS, which is manufactured in three different degrees of whiteness, as well as yellow, red and orange bases.

From these polyurethane coatings Normafine 80, Normafine HS, Normadur 65 HS and Normadur Aqua DTM are designed to be used as direct-to-metal coatings. This means they must provide sufficient hiding power even without a separate primer.

When the paint is tinted from a clear base colour, often, for example, with yellow shades, paint starts to sag. A large amount of tinting colourant must be added to the paint to achieve the correct shade and good hiding power. The large amount of tinting paste thins the paint, and its thixotropy disappears. With coloured bases, sagging problems reduce. When the opacity and base shade in the paint are achieved with pigments, less tinting paste is needed. Painting becomes easier when thicker and better hiding films can be sprayed with the coating.

In addition to sagging problems, drying-related challenges also ease. When a lot of tinting colourant is added to the paint, it often slows down the drying process. With coloured bases, the drying speed remains more constant, as the amount of tinting paste is smaller.

Improved opacity with coloured bases

Yellow shades have good opacity in Normafine 80 and Normafine HS coatings.

Advantages of coloured bases:

  • BETTER OPACITY – ALSO WITH DIRECT-TO-METAL COATINGS
  • BETTER PAINTABILITY – LESS SAGGING WITH COLOURED BASE PAINT
  • BETTER DRYING – LESS TINTING PASTE NEEDED

Nor-Maali’s Normafine 40 HS – A Reliable Choice for Colder Conditions

31/10/2024 As autumn cools down and winter approaches, it's good to consider which coatings best suit for industrial painting in cold conditions. Cold weather can pose challenges for painting and often increases costs, but with the right product selection, significant savings can be achieved without compromising quality. The drying temperature of the paint and the number of coating layers directly impact the process's cost-efficiency. In this context, Nor-Maali’s Normafine 40 HS is an excellent choice—a high-solids polyurethane coating that cures even in low temperatures and functions effectively as a direct-to-metal coating solution.
