How to achieve the corrosion resistance of epoxies and fine surface properties along with weather resistance of polyurethanes in a single painting system, where the use of isocyanates is not desired? By choosing Norecryl 50, an isocyanate-free acrylic coating.
Polyurethane coatings have been widely used as topcoats due to their excellent weatherability. In addition, they help with corrosion resistance and provide long overcoating window. However, polyurethane coatings contain isocyanates, which some customers do not want to use in their processes due to the labelling. Then, which coating to use, if isocyanates are forbidden? Many properties of polyurethanes, such as weather resistance, are really important in paint systems. Epoxies can give corrosion resistance, but they chalk and fade in sunlight. How to combine the best of these paint types?
When considering a suitable alternative to the isocyanate-free solution, Nor-Maali’s laboratory manager Mika Perälä immediately mentions Norecryl 50. This product is a two-component isocyanate-free acrylic coating launched by Nor-Maali already some time ago. Perälä says, that the coating combines the best properties of epoxies and polyurethanes: Corrosion and mechanical resistance with an automotive type finis along with weather resistance. He further emphasizes, that Norecryl 50 differs from many other coatings with its excellent anti-corrosion properties. The product is used as a direct-to-metal coating (single coat) in corrosion class C4 medium with a 140 µm DFT. Norecryl 50 is comparable to epoxies in terms of its corrosion resistance, but differs from them due to its weather resistance. When epoxy chalks and fades in sunlight, Norecryl 50 retains its color and gloss. Due to its moderate weather resistance, Norecryl 50 is suitable for weather conditions in Northern and Central Europe.
Norecryl 50 also offers cost-effective corrosion protection. The product has pot-life of 3.5 hours, which is long compared to many 2-component polyurethane coatings. Paint loss is minimized and objects to be painted can be completed by single spraying. If you want to speed up the throughput, the drying of Norecryl 50 can be accelerated at an elevated temperature. Reduction of the carbon footprint and costs in the production are possible due to the good drying properties at room temperature also. By this way, a throughput time is still faster than with two-layer systems. Norecryl 50 is suitable for machinery and equipment and general steel structure projects.
